What's the best fuel economy you've achieved in your MK5 GTI?

Pretty happy with myself after hitting a record of 41.7mpg by the end of my 25 minute mostly-countryside commute. This at an average speed of 65kmh (40mph-ish) slowing down a few times for t-junctions.

Usually if I'm not driving like a granny I'll get 32mpg though 

I know my Octavia's around 80-100kg heavier than the MK5, so I'm wondering what's the highest mpg you guys have gotten?

Pre-tune and mods I once saw 38.5mpg from Wiltshire to Bath, that was really trying! But with a bit of traffic here and there to throw it off a bit. Maybe I could of got closer to 40 in similar conditions/roads to you.

I rarely see above 30mpg these days, with a heavy right foot and a tune.

I was lucky to get 30mpg when I first got mine but since having the injector/inlet clean, new PCV and a remap I quite often get 35mpg.
My record was 39.8 trundling down the A1.

Haha I know how that feels, my previous record was 39.7 travelling through Dublin's endless industrial estates. Was annoyed that a red light towards the end ruined my goal of 40.

sticking to speed limits mixture of 30-60mph  44mpg
same roads but putting the foot down when you find some nice bends and a coupe of treble figure wot pulls then back to speed limits around 40 mpg
flat out everywhere low to mid 20s

Late 30s, early 40s is easily achievable with early gear shifts to keep out of boost, and low cruising speeds, but that's dull!

The real measure of a car's fuel economy is it's long term average. Not short term anomalies.

Driving normally, i.e. regularly boosting, cruising at 80+, heavy traffic etc, mine has averaged 33mpg over the 8 years I've had it, which is right about where it should be for the engine's power, vehicle weight, and gearing

Well said! If fuel economy is your priority get a Lupo diesel 64.2MPG combined. But it will never be as much fun as a lightly tuned Golf GTi.

Carbon build up is an issue with driving these things slowly as well. They need lots of heat to keep carbon from sticking to the valves, around 500 deg C, and you're not going to achieve that driving it to the shops and crawling along at 50 mph

It's true that cars generally suffer if not driven hard every once in a while. My dad's 1.4 petrol Audi A2 had too much water in the exhaust, and his mechanic instructing him 'to give it a good thrashing'. And so he did. Those were the some of the most fun memories we had in that 75hp 895kg rocket (until the engine seized)

I hit 44.4mpg on my commute back home, driving so carefully that I make grandmas look like reckless drivers  . Technically it was 43.8mpg at the end of the trip because of a busy t-junction nearly my house. I don't think I'll ever get higher than what I got today.

I've noticed my mpg is slowly creeping up since switching to Shell E10.  Long term average on V Power was 33mpg, but after 5 tanks of E10, it's risen to 35mpg.

I don't really understand that as ethanol is massively less energy dense than petrol, so if anything I would expect a 5-10% dip in fuel economy!

I had an indicated 39.3 mpg over 200 miles @ 70 on the Motorway (with 3 passengers plus luggage). That's a mapped car aswell so pretty good really on a run.

Never done a true mpg test though so not sure if the trip computer is generous or not?

I find the long term average (switch to mpg on the stalk, then press the memory button underneath to change over to "MPG 2") is very close to working it out at the pump.

MPG 1 I don't find to be particularly accurate as it's too dynamic, and the live mpg reading is just a joke

Sorry if i'm being an idiot but where is the memory button you mention? the only time I've been able to access 'MPG 2' is when i briefly had steering wheel buttons, but had to remove them as for some reason they stopped the paddles from working
